What are micro futures?
A futures contract's dollar risk is set by its multiplier. The E-mini Nasdaq-100 (NQ) pays $20 per index point; the Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 (MNQ) pays $2 per point. Both settle to the same index, quote the same prices, trade the same Globex session (Sunday 6:00 PM to Friday 5:00 PM ET for equity index contracts, with a daily 5:00–6:00 PM ET halt), and expire on the same quarterly cycle.
So a micro is not a beginner product with different behavior. It is the identical market with a smaller multiplier. Your levels, signals, and stop distances are the same. Only the P&L per point changes.

What a micro actually risks per trade
Translate the specs into stop-loss dollars and the appeal is obvious.
A 40-point stop on MNQ risks $80. The same stop on NQ risks $800. On a $5,000 account running 1% risk per trade ($50), one MNQ with a 25-point stop fits the plan exactly. One NQ contract cannot get anywhere near it — even a 10-point stop (which normal Nasdaq noise chews through constantly) risks $200, four times the budget.

The honest downside: micros cost more per dollar of exposure
Commissions do not scale down 10x. - Consistently at 10+ micros: switch that block to one E-mini and cut the commission bill for identical exposure.
Micro futures margins
Margins vary by broker and change when CME resets requirements. As of July 2026, day-trade margins for equity index micros commonly sit anywhere from about $50 to a few hundred dollars per contract depending on the broker; overnight margins are substantially higher.
Treat low margin as a leverage warning, not an invitation. Who should trade micro futures?
Micros fit you if:
- You are validating a strategy. A statistically meaningful test takes dozens to hundreds of trades — here is how many trades a real backtest needs. Paying full E-mini size for that sample is expensive tuition.
- Your account is small. Under roughly $25,000, micro-step sizing is what keeps one loss from dominating the equity curve.
- You scale in or out. Each micro adjusts exposure by exactly 10% of an E-mini — granularity the full contract cannot offer.
- You are preparing for a prop-firm evaluation. Micros stop fitting when your standard position reaches about ten of them. At that point the commission drag argument flips and the E-mini becomes the cheaper vehicle for the same trade.
One thing micros do not fix: a losing strategy loses on micros too, just more slowly. They shrink the cost of your mistakes; they do not remove the need to find an edge.
Micro futures for day trading
